In the early 1890s, a doctor established residence in what was then the Arizona Territory. In less than ten years he assembled 18,000 acres, which came to be known as the Chandler Ranch. Later, he started to plan a township on the site, and by 1913 the beginnings of the town had taken root, including the sumptuous Hotel San Marcos, which became Arizona's first golf resort.
