Brief History of Gilbert

Local legend William “Bobby” was one of the last real cowboys; complete with hat, bandana, high-heeled boots - and shoot-outs. Born in 1857, he worked extensively around the United States and Mexico, and even traveled to London. Eventually, he purchased and built-up the 16,000 acre Gilbert Ranch, east of what would become Chandler, Arizona.

Later, Gilbert granted the Arizona Eastern Railway the right to lay tracks through his property. A depot was built to service the trains, and the stop shortly became the center for transporting products from the community’s prime farms. Shipping hay to World War I cavalry horses had become the mainstay of the area’s economy, and when Gilbert, AZ was first established in 1910, it was known as the “Hay Capital of the World.” It retained that designation until about 1920, when the Town of Gilbert, Arizona was officially incorporated.
